Are there any special licenses needed to obtain a Fire/EMS personal radio?
I work as an EMT in the Scranton Pa area. the company I work for staffs a few volunteer fire stations. As part of my work we carry a portable radio. I would like to buy my own personal portable radio. I want to so that no matter where I’m working I will have the same radio, one I am familiar with and know the functions of.
Is there anything special license or permit I need, to get a radio that can transmit and receive on the Fire and EMS channels in Lackawanna and Wyoming County ?
Does the radio need to be UHF of VHF ?
No license is required. (The necessary licenses are held by the agency, or by the state or county on behalf of the agency.) You should obtain permission, however, from each agency. Some may be willing to give it, some not.
It may or may not be possible to get one radio to use with all the agencies. That depends not only on frequencies used but also whether the agencies have trunked systems, etc. If you can obtain a suitable radio, you will be stunned at the cost.
