Umbro Shirts Dominate Premiership Football Kits Sales
The preparation for the start of the 2009-10 season is just starting to get into full swing and we are starting to see more transfer activity from Premiership teams. Early transfer activity has very much been dominated by Real Madrid but now that they seem to be almost finished their spending spree if is now down to the Premiership clubs to start their preparations for next season. Part of these preparations is to release the new shirts for the new season with most of the teams having now released the latest designs and what is surprising is that Umbro produces the Premiership shirts for more teams than any other manufacturer, in fact they manufacture shirts from the same number of Premiership teams as Nike and Adidas combined.
Nike and Adidas are very much thought of as the biggest brands but Umbro have shown their dominance in the Premiership by producing shirts for 6 premiership teams this year – Birmingham City, Blackburn Rovers, West Ham, Manchester City, Sunderland and Hull. This is a huge achievement for Umbro who also produce the shirts for the national team. This shows that they are able to offer designs that rival the top brands. This success in England is not really seen in Europe where they are still not very well represented but they will be hoping that their growing presence in England can lead to them breaking into the bigger European market. Umbro do have a presence in most leagues in Britain including Rangers in the SPL but their progress abroad has been slow.
Although Nike and Adidas individually have less Premiership teams than Umbro, they do have the biggest selling Premiership shirts in England and have the biggest teams. Adidas has Chelsea and Liverpool while Nike has Arsenal, Aston Villa, Fulham and Man Utd these 6 teams were all in the top 7 of the Premiership last season showing that although they don’t have the highest number of teams individually they do have the biggest selling and most popular Premiership shirts. Umbro had the other top 7 finisher last season with Everton who has since changed their shirt manufacturer to Le Coq Sportif.
The remaining 8 teams in the Premiership have 6 different retailers with Le Coq Sportif manufacturing three teams shirts with all other brands manufacturing only one each. The diversity of the manufacturers of the Premiership shirts has allowed us in recent years to see different designs and manufacturers that were never in the Premiership before. Portsmouth are th only team to have their shirt manufactured by Canterbury which was the first time we have really seen a brand more associated with rugby product the kit for a premiership team. Similarly Vandanel will manufacture Wiggins kit this season which is the first time they will manufacture a Premiership shirt.
Sales of Premiership shirts should really start to take off in the next couple of months as the extent of signing’s made really starts to show. Also once the season starts the interest in the new shirts really starts to spike especially if players start the season well. Nike and Adidas will again by far sell the most shirts in the Premiership this season with all their teams releasing new kits for the 2009-10 season. Adidas and Nike usually always have two teams each in the top four finishers in the league so it will be interesting to see if any other brand can break into the top four in the Premiership or indeed in Nike can turn that in their favor. Whatever happens it is sure to be an interesting season that will no doubt see good sales on Premiership shirts.
