An old TV vs. a new TV?

My mom is 88 yrs old and uses a very old TV, probably over 20 yrs old. It works just fine. I did buy her a new digital box, but was wondering??? Hers only uses an indoor antenna so I think the “box” will not work. And she is not attached to any cable she just gets about 7 channels plus a few UHF ones. If I buy her a new LCD (small one) that already has the digital built in, will it work with some kind of rabbit ears? If we do put up an outside antenna without any cable companies involved will it work properly? She has no desire to get cable TV (or any of the others). Thank you.

The converter boxes need an antenna just like analog tuners need one.

If she gets good picture quality now the same antenna will probably be fine for digital reception. If the TV has a built in antenna that works good, you can probably attach a cheap $10 rabbit ear antenna to the converter.

A new LCD TV will need the same kind of antenna that a converter box will need. If a converter box needs an outside antenna, the new LCD TV will also.

Most areas already have digital broadcasts now. It’s best to get the converter working now rather than waiting for the analog transmitters to shut down on 2/17/09. Plus like all other cheap electronics, you want to run it a lot the first month to catch any early failure during the warrently/return period.

Outdoor antennas almost always work better than indoor antennas, but if an indoor antenna can do the job, why bother?

Not all converters are created equal, I’d suggest a RCA DTA 800B1 for your mother, mostly because the remote control is elderly friendly. Some Walmarts carry this model for about $50 ($10 after coupon) , otherwise it can be hard to find.

The Zenith DTT 901/Insigia model has a better tuner (in case she gets marginal reception) , but the remote isn’t as friendly. If I were putting one of these on my mother’s TV, I’d probably buy a learning remote control to make operating it simpler.
