‘VXA-300 Pilot III’ Is it legal to use in the cockpit as a backup radio?
I am a student pilot and want to buy a handheld transceiver. I have finalised Icom A24 and VXA-300 Pilot III. Icom is much dearer and is CE approved but VXA-300 has mixed reactions from its own dealers. Some say it is not allowed to be used in the UK but some say it can be used as an backup radio. Though VXA-300 is for sale on websites like AFEONLINE and TRANSAIR.co.uk, I am not sure if I can use it as a backup radio in the UK and Europe.
In general the loss of a radio is considered an emergency situation. In the US the FAA allows for the deviation from an FAR for the safety of flight in the event of an emergency. When I fly I carry a transceiver and a cell phone! Neither are allowed to be installed as primary communications (a cell phone isnt allowed for instrument operations). I had total radio failure a few months ago for the first time, and tell you what was i glad to have other forms of communication. I ended up using my cell phone to relay messages to the tower via a ground station.

This power meter uses a USB interface for data communication with a PC.
