Castlemartyr (Irish: Baile na Martra) is a village in east County Cork in Ireland. It is located 25 minutes east of Cork city, 10km (6mi) east of Midleton, 16km (10mi) west of Youghal and 6km (4mi) from the coast. About 500 people live in the village with a further 2,000 in its immediate hinterland.
It is situated on the busy N25 national primary road and has an expanding network of community and sporting organisations. In August 2007 the Capella hotel opened. It is described as Ireland’s only ‘6 star hotel’ and has brought a lot more visitors to the area in recent times.
Castlemartyr is also a historical village with a range of sites of archaeological and socio-cultural interest, reflecting virtually every era in the country’s history and pre-history.
History
Overview of the history of the village
Bronze Age
Traces of an ancient civilisation, almost certainly Bronze Age, are to be found in the immediate vicinity of Castlemartyr. A group of six tumuli or mounds can still be seen across the areas of Ballindinis, Ballyvorisheen and Knockane. In addition to this is what tradition refers to as a ribal village, and this is still discernible in the form of what are thought to be burial mounds in the townland of Clasharinka.
Early Christian Imokilly
During the Early Christian era, the Imokilly was highly representative of Irish life between the fifth and eleventh centuries. The region boasts a variety of geographical areas and environmental settings, ranging from fertile river valleys, to highlands and bogs and a coastal belt. The Barony of Imokilly takes its name from the uath or tribal kingdom call U mac Caille who occupied this part of East Cork for a number of centuries. The U mac Caille was itself, an offshoot of the U Liathn sect, which had its centre at Castlelyons and the U Liathn was in its turn a branch of the ruling dynasty of Munster, the Eoganachta.
The U Liathn sect were in constant competition for land with other branches of the U Liathn who vied for control over the rich Kiltha river valley. In fact this trend tended to be a dominant one in the earlier part of our Gaelic history, where the overlords attempted to impose themselves on the domains of the minor chiefs. In fighting within the U Liathn sect, that is between the U mac Caille and other tribal branches had the effect of undermining the U Liathn as a whole.
Ring Forts
We can still see evidence of the early local tribes attempts to defend themselves and their livestock against marauders and the very real threat posed by wild animals. These defences were in the form of ring-forts or aths – which were circular earthworks used as dwellings and farmyards and located on raised ground so as to maximise their defences. Perhaps the best remaining examples of these early fortification/dwellings are to be found in the vicinity of the village at Mogeely, Kilrush, Couragh, Ballygibbon, Parknahyla, Rathaha, Kilbree, Ballybutler and Dromada More.
Early Monasticism in Imokilly
The rich agricultural land of the area provided not only a source of tribal conflict but also a good basis for a number of ecclesiastical settlements in the vicinity of Castlemartyr. Examples of these included Kilboraree, St. Fachta Ria settlement, Kilva and one at Castletown. The early Irish monastery was in a prime position to develop a surplus in its economy and far quicker than those outside the monastery.
It is very likely that in times of shortage, monasteries like those at Ightermurragh, Cahirultan, Kilcredan, and Dungourney (all along the traditional othar na Naomh or Saints Path) became the target of those lay-people in times of famine and plague.
The Anglo Normans
At around the period the Anglo-Normans arrived in Ireland one of the dominant families in the area was the U Meic Tire (from which the modern derivative MacCarthaigh is believed to originate). Infighting between the U Meic Te family facilitated the Anglo-Norman conquest of Imokilly. It is recorded that in 1177, King Henry II granted the Kingdom of Cork to Robert FitzStephen and Milo de Cogan, two Anglo-Norman adventurers who had played prominent roles in the conquest of Ireland.
