Why does my handheld scanner (Radio Shack) not work when plugged in?
I have a Handheld Radio Scanner (Radio Shack Brand SKU: 200-0404 Model PRO-404). I was wondering if there was some way to use the scanner without the use of batteries while having it plugged into an A/C (or D/C) Adapter. I’ve tried it when plugged in with the yellow rechargeable battery holder and it still works but it doesn’t seem to want to work without the batteries when its in. Is it not made to do this?

The DC jack may be loose or broken. If anything, take the scanner to your local Radio Shack and see if they know.

Troubleshooting Guideline For Your Cd Radio
A journey without music in your will be so unpleasant. It will also be a dull road travel. This happens when there exists a problem in your car CD player. But when such a problem arises one will always think about the cost of repair that would jump onto his head when he approaches a service station with his problem of car CD troubleshooting. But do not worry. Before you try to head away to the service station do check out for few faults on your own just by following the simple procedures given below. This may possibly help one to diagnose the problem for trouble shooting and then the repair for it.
The first thing that should be done in trouble shooting is to find out the specific problem. One of the easy things that could help finding the defect is by checking whether the radio works properly or you can check the output volume of all speakers and check whether they are all equal. Once the specific defect is identified, the solution can be easily reached.
There are certain simple remedies to find the defects. First is to check the fade and balance control, this helps to find out which all speaker is working and which are not working. The power cables must be checked when the CD player does not switch on or if the display is fully blank. Another thing to be done is to ensure whether all the fuses are in good condition.
The reason for not receiving the sound in the speaker may be due to break in flow of current through it. Buy a radio shack from any electronics shop and use it to check the current flow through the wires for speakers. The speaker’s grill covers are unscrewed and snapped off. And then the mounted speakers are also removed.
The alligator clips are attached to speaker wires. As the current entering the speaker may not produce the sound you may get an indication that it is a blown speaker. If such an indication does not come then probably there might be a broken wire. Rather than locating the old wire and repairing the fault it is desirable to put a new wire to the speaker.
The next thing one should do for checking for trouble shooting is checking the wiring connected to the backside of the CD player using a flashlight at the back side of the dash board. If all these wiring are safe and secure then disconnect the positive cable from the battery of the car. This will put the CD player back to the factory conditions resetting all its characteristics to the initial stage. This will solve the problem in trouble shooting but you need to tune back all your stations and reset your clock.
There also appears a problem of disc error. In this case clean the disc drive using a lens cleaning solution. A drop of rubbing alcohol can be used for effecting the cleaning power.
One need not head to the service as soon as he encounters a problem in car CD troubleshooting, these simple steps would be like a initial check for your car CD player.
