What is a good radio to get started with amateur radio?
I’m looking for a smaller hand held radio that i could take on hikes or in the car. a desktop model wouldn’t be bad either. what are your suggestions?
HT’s are cool but I’m hesitant to recommend and HT to a newcomer at least not without informing them of the limitations of such a radio. HT’s are small and portable and these days can receive practically from DC to daylight. BUT — they are limited. They are not base radios. They’re limited to 5 watts or less unless you pair it up with an amplifier. They typically transmit FM only and only on VHF and UHF. If you like to limit yourself to repeaters, some simplex contacts and the easy satellites (with appropriate antenna) then no problem. There’s much more to ham radio than VHF/UHF repeaters and I’d hate for a new ham’s first and often only impression of ham radio to be that. The antennas they come with are inherently lossy. As long as you know what you’re getting into when you get an HT, it’s okay. I have a Yaesu VX-7R and love it. Yaesu has a new model out now, the VX-8R which is jam packed with features like bluetooth and APRS, quad band transmit, general coverage receive with internal ferrite rod antenna for AM. It’s not full duplex though which without another radio can work against you for satellite contacts. Now this radio runs about $330. If that’s out of your price range check out the used market. Go to a hamfest and see what’s available. Older HT’s like the Radio Shack HTX-202 are nice monoband 5 watt solid radios for about $50. An old IC-2AT finished on eBay lately for $20 although they’re only 1.5 watts and quite old these days. Mobile FM only radios can be had for cheap. A Yaesu FT-2700RH went on eBay lately for $82 which is a full duplex FM 2m/70cm 25W radio. Pair this up with a good dual band antenna for the car and one for the house and you’d be good to go. Build a cross yagi and get on satellite. There’s more than VHF/UHF than FM though. There’s sideband and CW and data modes. You can do meteor scatter, long distance tropo contacts, EME, passband satellites and more. All mode radios of course cost more but it is something to consider depending on which direction you want to go. There’s also fast scan television too which is a whole ‘nother can of worms.
If you are a General class license or above, I’d get an old HF radio and throw up a dipole antenna you can make yourself right easy in your backyard. You could be making contacts all over the world! A new FT-817ND runs a little over $500 and is armstrap portable, although only 5W which is considered QRP (low power) on HF. FT-857D for another $150 more, you’re less apt to take on a hike since it transmits 100W but it’s not much bigger in size and can be run from a car although good HF mobile antennas can be costly. Hamsticks are a cheap alternative and run around $12 for the knock off brand for each band. Note that they’re around 7 feet tall! You can get some HF radios for cheaper, especially older tube units. I’ve seen some go on eBay for around $200. There are some QRP kits as cheap as $30 too which can be fun. I’ve built a CW 40m transceiver kit that’s small enough it fit into an Altoids tin. Radio Controlled Hobbies – Tips To Develop One
If electronic gadgets can get you crazy and all interested, you should be the right one to become involved in radio-controlled hobbies. Assembling and designing different vehicles can be made possible with radio controlled hobbies. Amateur radio hobby, on the other hand, can be taken by people who are more interested in making contact with other persons via wireless transmissions.

Spending more time in this could do wonders as you might get to know more about the hobby you are involved in as well as the information on the supplies.
