separation anxiety in my am staff?
i do not want to use meds, but he destroys everything to get to my family. our fence only slows him down, he has chewed through doors and walls to get around it. we resorted to tying him up, and he has chewed through 1/2 inch plastic coated cables and figured out how to open most clasps.he always comes to find us once he gets out. now he is on a chain with a twist up mountain climbing clasp. it works but he cries, acts crazy when he gets off,and i hate tying him up. any ideas on how i can train him to stay home. by the way he isn’t left at home for very long 1-2 hours max a day. he is very obedient and trainable other than this. any help will be appreciated
Separation anxiety can be tough. Some things that might help are:
– Extra exercise (a tired dog is a less stressed dog).
– Ignoring the dog when you first return home. Try to make your comings/goings low key. Don’t fuss over the dog when you leave. No prolonged good byes and no happy hello’s.
– Practice coming/going with short stints. Put the dog where they will stay while you’re gone, leave for just a minute and then return. Again, no fuss. The practice with short time frames reinforces that you’ll be returning.
This can be a difficult thing to work on. I know you mentioned you don’t want to medicate, but I would recommend something herbal like Rescue Remedy to help the dog get over the worst of it, while you work on the training aspect of it.
