Vintage Astatic

In the stock market, there is an old Wall Street adage to “Sell in May and go away.” It refers to the market’s tendency to perform much better during the six month period beginning on November 1st and ending on April 30th than during the period of the same length beginning on May 1st and ending on October 31st. It’s also known as the Halloween Indicator.

According to the 2005 edition of the Stock Trader’s Almanac, the six month period beginning in November gained 10,599.68 Dow Jones Industrial Average points in 54 years. The remaining six months, from the beginning of May through the end of October, lost 588.44 points. The S&P 500 index gained 1089.23 points in the November-April period and gained just 62.09 points during the May-October period.

A $10,000 investment in the Dow made in 1950 and ending in 2003 would have grown to $483,060 during the November-April period and lost $328 during the May-October period. That’s the origin of the saying to “Sell in May and go away.”

So, on the surface, it seems like a no-brainer. Just invest in the stock market during the best six months of the year and do something else with your money during the rest of the year. In fact, there are quite a few investment strategies based on doing just that.

However, like anything else that seems too good to be true, on closer examination it’s not quite that simple. According to Mark Hulbert, editor of Market Watch, the Halloween Indicator has done much better since 1970 than during the years before.

Since 1970, the average six-month return during the November-April period is +8.39%, which on an annualized basis is more than 17%. And the return during the May-October period is -0.03%. But, before 1970, the return during the best six months is +3.62% and the return during the worse six months is +2.71% — a statistically insignificant difference.

So what’s the deal? Did something fundamentally change in 1970? It’s hard to say and that’s the problem. There have been attempts to explain what may have changed. According to a study done by the American Economic Review, the timing of summer vacations may have something to do with it. Before 1970, the timing and length of summer vacations was significantly different than in the last three or four decades.

Hmm… I’m not so sure about that. In fact, as far as I’m concerned it’s never been adequately explained why the stock market would do better during one six month period of time than another, no matter which years you’re talking about. But I know this — an indicator that can’t be explained on its merits should probably not be the basis for investing money — no matter what the historical return.

The holidays are upon us. Which holidays you might ask? Well, does it truly matter? There is so much to do to prepare for each event throughout the year, that they tend to blend together. Of course, everyone has a favorite, but that is not the point. You know whom to invite to your home; what to cook is always decided at some point; and how to arrange the house is certainly an issue. However, one may also wish to consider care for the blinds in the home as well. The vertical blinds are not that important, you say? Consider this article a statement on that.

A clean living room is a lot of work. Rearrange the furniture, vacuum the carpets. But look at the blinds. When was the last time you cleaned them? This is the point. If your home looks great without caring for the vertical blinds, imagine if you did take the extra step and maintain the vertical blinds. The work is quite simple, and can sometimes extend the life of the vertical blinds, but you need to do simply start to get it done.

When you start to review your vertical blinds and prepare the preholiday care, first check that everything is functioning properly. Ensure that the tension pulley is properly attached to the wall. If this is loose, or not properly fastened, homeowners should have this safety issue resolved. If the attachment is not an easy repair, it is worth it to hire a carpenter to make this fix to the vertical blinds.

Next, check that every vertical blinds slat is intact. If there are broken slats, these can, sometimes, be repaired with a bit of hot glue. However, if you are not comfortable with this, or you might make a mess, or there are many issues to fix, consider replacing the slats. There are some internet companies that can ship vertical blinds slats quite quickly to update the presentation.

If the slats of the vertical blinds are dirty, consider cleaning them. For PVC slats, they may be cleaned with a simple cloth wipe. Sometimes, however, this process of cleaning PVC will add a static charge, which can make them require cleaning more regularly. If you have fabric vertical blinds, you may be able to wash the slats in a cool water solution. Ensure that your slat material has this ability to be washed by contacting your vendor. If they are not washable, consider replacing the vertical blinds slats for a technological update.

Finally, make sure that the blinds are installed straight and that the valance is parallel to the ceiling. This vertical blinds feature must be installed straight of the entire room will look off balance. A slight error in this is enough to mess up your desire to look great in your presentation.

If you vertical blinds look great after this regular care, consider this as a normal preholiday plan. Regular care for your home furnishings will help them last, and some of the steps above will help create a safer set of vertical blinds, as well as a set that will last longer and continue to look beautiful for years to come. Poorly maintained vertical blinds, however, will see the track hanging loosely at a side, or vanes dangling by a piece of broken plastic, or a tension pulley that may be loose. These situations will see one of the following situations as a result: unattractive vertical blinds, a fallen blind that can hurt someone or break something, or a dangerous safety situation with a tension pulley installed. As an aside, by the way, if your vertical blinds use a dangling cord weight, this needs to be replaced immediately from your vertical blinds.
