How would you use a mobile screwdriver tune antenna for base operation?
I bought this motorized screw tune antenna for running hf mobile. well i sold my truck so now i have a $500.00 screwdriver antenna never used i would like to put to use. knowing i would never sell it and even if i could i wouldnt get close to what i paid for it i would like to use it as a base antenna. i have a pretty descent size back yard im positive it would work ground mounted to a pole driven into the ground with good size ground radials streched out all over my back yard. but i would like to try and get away without using huge ground radials. preferable id like to mount it ontop of my shed out of the way. how could i do this where it would still load all the way down to 3mhz without huge ground radials?
If your shed has a metal roof your in luck. The biggest problem with “short vertical antennas” is that they are very inefficient. They also have a very narrow band wight. If you add radials, remember many short radials are better than a few long ones. I’d only use the screw driver for 30 meters and up. Use a dipole for 80 and 40 meters.
