What can a computer control on a Yaesu 857 ham/amateur radio?
I am considering the purchase of my first HF rig. I was considering a larger (TS 2000, IC 746) for their ease of operation (controls in the open), as most of the time I will operate as a base. The portability of the 857 is very appealing. The 857 has a computer interface, but I am unclear on WHAT it controls. Is the interface only to access the keyboard/monitor, or does it also control the radio function? How user friendly is this radio for long sessions?
I prefer the Icom, the Kenwood looks to me that the designer spent too much time in “auto-shop”…
There is a great software package that will do what you need, Ham Radio Deluxe (HRD) by HB9DVR.
You need a computer with a serial port, a TTL/RS232 adapter (Icom calls it a CI-V cable, you can make it easy enough – $5.00, or buy one $35.00) and HRD
