Ham radio question about reciever technology?
So I know you can detect and listen in on any analog frequency as long as you have the proper reciever. What I am wondering is, if it is possible to listen in on cell phone conversations using a specially designed reciever? How exactly are cell phone calls transmitted? What type of encryption? I obviously know that this is illegal and am not actually going to build the project because it would probably also be prohibitively expensive, esp if I get caught!
When the AMPS system was in place, it was possible to eavesdrop using a receiver that could tune 800-999 MHz. The Icom IC-R8500 can tune these frequencies, but the ranges are blocked for those ICOM receivers sold in the US. The cellular bands include 800, 900, 1800, 1900, and 2100 MHz. The modulation designs are no longer analog, and most systems are enciphered. I doubt that a police department has a receiver capable of receiving current digital format signals.
