Ham Radio Antenna impedance?

I have a transmitting ham radio with a stock rubber ducky antenna. The antenna is very poor at sending a signal so I want to make a much larger one to increase its transmitting range. There is one major problem. Unlike a regular radio were you could put many different sizes and shaped antennas on it to receive a signal, a transmitting radio has to have an antenna with the right amount of impedance (measured in ohms). My radio has to have an antenna with 50 ohms of impedance any less and any more could damage or destroy to radio. So how do you measure the impedance of an antenna? Can you measure it with a standard ohm meter and if you can what are the steps you would take to do so?

If you don’t know please don’t answer.

Use an antenna analyzer – they have a built-in noise bridge, which is the actual instrument that detects complex impedance. In addition, you might want to use a grid dip oscillator to find your antenna’s resonant frequency.

Make sure you measure the antenna’s impedance at the feedpoint. This will give you the most accurate reading, as it eliminates any possible feedline issues.

The following website is devoted to CB antenna theory, but the theory is the same at least the 10 & 12 meter ham bands which are near CB frequencies (27 MHz 11 meter AM and SSB).

That was David Beckham in his new role as player liaison, US football expert and sidekick for Fabio Capello’s tireless general manager Franco Baldini.
