Disdain for psychology from psychiatry?
I was intrigued to read Hannibal Lecter’s comment that he didn’t consider psychology a science, criticizing it as “puerile”, and opining that most psychology departments were filled with “ham radio enthusiasts and other personality-deficient buffs”.
Of course, Lecter is a fictional character, but I wondered to what extent this opinion might be held by psychiatrists or anybody else? Is this kind of disdain common towards psychology common from psychiatrists and others. Why, if so?
There’s a LOT more to psychology than merely treating people with mental disorders (in other words, clinical psychology). The many contributions made by psychology are by now impossible to ignore or dismiss. Although psychiatry’s contributions are also significant, remarks like those of Mr. Lecter are irrelevant.
