ham radio areas
Ham radio, sideband. Which is better?

I am interesting in ham radio or some type of wireless communication. I live in a rural area and the cell service is lacking. What is the difference between ham and sideband? Which would be more useful?

For ham radio, you will require a ham radio license from the country in which you live. In the USA and Canada, it requires you to study and pass a test. With ham radio, you can use transmitters that have a maximum power rating of 1000 watts.

CB radio, on the other hand does not require a license and is the first easy option to consider. Because it is unlicensed, CB radio is limited to a maximum power of 5 watts.

AM vs. SSB
Ham radio and CB radio bands both allow SSB mode of modulation.

Generally speaking, SSB has advantages over AM mode.

SSB uses approximately 1/2 the bandwidth of AM and is thus desirable in crowded band conditions.
SSB typically has longer range over AM for an equal amount of power.
This is because of SSB (Single Side Band) is focusing 100% of transmitted power into 1/2 the bandwidth of an AM signal and “effectively” gives higher gain for a given sideband (upper sideband vs. lower sideband).
