i do screaming vocals (metalcore, some deathcore as well), any tips?
I’ve been doing vocals for going on 2 years now, i do clean vocals as well, but i don’t find them as enjoyable, my screams, and growls sound pretty similar to ed butcher ( he has done vox for i killed the prom queen, eternal lord, and the hunt for ida wave) my growls, and mids are pretty tops, but sometimes when i go for a high scream i feel like my throat is clenched a little too tight, and its hard to project, but other times it sounds great, but again could be louder, any tips? and also i just recently tried smoking cigarettes, and i was wondering if 3-4 or less “light” cigs a week would take a negative tole on my screams( i do not have an addictive personality what so ever so smoking heavily isn’t an issue), even while practicing good throat, and vocal care, and practicing often, obviously quitting would be the best choice, but besides that how much of a negative influence would this have on my screams/growls?
Not trying to be a “mom”, but i’m in a band too, and smoking is not something you want to do if your a vocalist. It wears down your throat…I know alot of people say it helps them get a certain sound, but that sound is the smoke constricting the throat, which is not good.Look at the singer of A7X, his voice is so raspy now. And that clenched problem your having…just remember to drink water or tea while singing, but don’t drink after or during every song. I learned this the hard way, because if you take drink after every song, or during, you’ll be used to doing it, and it will feel bad not to do so after being so used to it. Good luck, hope I helped.
