How can i tell if a radio is in frequency range of my license?
Hi, i plan to take my test for the FCC license for ham radio.
I wanted to know, what is a good start for a beginner?
I was looking on eBay for a good hand-held.
What is a good radio for beginners that’s under $200?
How would i tell the difference?
I would like one that is able to be hooked up to the computer, but if that isn’t an option… that’s just fine.

Only 3 classes are still issued- Technician, General, and Amateur Extra. The other ones (Novice, Advanced) are no longer issued but licensees for those types still exist as long as they keep renewing their licenses.
If this is your first license, you’re probably getting the Technician license. Techs can mainly operate in the VHF and UHF bands and above. So the radio you’ll want is probably a normal dual band radio, with VHF (144-148MHz) and UHF (420-450MHz). There’s a lot of fun to be had in those bands, much of it from using repeaters to talk to other hams in a wider area than your radio covers.
However, you should consider if you really want a portable (handheld) radio for your first rig. Portables only have 5 watts of transmit power, which really isn’t a lot. If you expect to do a lot of operating from the car, get a mobile (12v car powered) rig and a magnetic antenna instead.
I suggest this from experience- my first rig was a portable but I was mostly operating from the car and wished I’d bought a mobile. The portable was extremely range-limited (operating from inside the car greatly reduces your signal levels), and even with an external (outside the car) antenna the 5w of transmit just wasn’t enough. I have since bought a nice mobile rig and am much happier.
As for being able to be hooked up to a computer, that can mean a few things. You can hook up to the computer to program the radio, almost every radio can do that (although the cables and software are sold separately).
You can also hook up to the computer to send data transmissions, which is a very different type of cable. For this you’ll want something like a West Mountain Radio RigBlaster- a device which makes an audio connection to the computer and lets the computer operate the PTT (transmit button).
I’d recommend you look for something more like an Icom IC-208H or a Yaesu FT-7800R. The Icom might be a bit above your price range, but the 7800 is discontinued so you can probably find a used one for under $200.
Also, stay away from eBay, especially as a first timer. There are tons of useless auctions there including auctions for the export versions of the radios which lack useful features like NOAA weather radio. Instead go to hamfests or local ham radio clubs where you can meet the seller, or try ham-specific sites like eham.net or qrz.com, both of which have active buy/sell/trade forums.
Lastly, join a local amateur radio club (or two). Go here: http://www.arrl.org/find-a-club and you can find amateur radio clubs in your area. Some clubs focus on some things more than others, and it’s common to belong to two or more clubs.
Lastly, consider joining the ARRL (amateur radio relay league). It’s the USA national ham radio association, they provide a great number of useful services. For $40/year membership you get the QST magazine (which is worth reading) and they have a number of other useful services like the Tech Info Service- if you have a radio-related tech question you can call or email them and they find answers for free (for members only of course).
