Substituting a Power Adapter?

I’m looking at purchasing an old ethernet transceiver but it does not come with the power supply. The current owner says they used a 12V adapter from radio shack.

The company site says this on their Data Sheet:

Power Supply: 115 Vac at 30 watts
60Hz (220 V available)

Wouldn’t I need a power supply that said 115V which is way more than 12 Volts?

Thanks for your reply. Based on the company info, how do you know it’s 12V? Or are you just basing it off the current owner’s comments?

What if an adapter is 12V but a bit higher or lower in wattage? Is it possible to still use one that is higher or lower?

The first owner should be right. The 115V is the input of the adapter. The adapter output is 12V which is needed by the transceiver.

It is the same as a direction finder at sea.

The GPS antenna may be installed in the vehicle, for instance on the meter or on the cloth rack; it also may be installed outside of the vehicle, for instance on the roof or boot of the vehicle.

The GPS antenna has to be installed at the area no metal frame/structure goes over it. If the vehicles windscreen has installed the anti-explosion tinting film or the insulate tinting, the intensity of the satellite signal may be weaken, in which case we will strongly suggest to install the GPS antenna outside of vehicle.

Tip 1. This unit is compatible only for vehicles come with a 12-volt battery and negative grounding.

Tip 2. To avid short circuits in the vehicle electrical system during installation, be sure to disconnect the negative terminal(-) from the battery before the installation.

Tip 3. Secure all wiring with cable clamps or electrical tapes. Do not allow any bare wiring to remain exposed.

Tip 5. Do not route cables to any high temperatures areas. If the insulation heats up, cables may get damaged and result in a short circuit or malfunction and cause permanent damages to the unit and the vehicle.

Tip 6. Do not cut or extent the GPS antenna cable to make it shorter or longer. Altering the antenna cable could result in a short circuit or malfunction.

Tip 7. To avoid short circuits, wrap up the discounnected lead with insullating tapes.

Tip 8. When replacing the fuse, be sure to only use a fuse of the same type and grade.

Tip 9. Never connect speakers with an output rating that the unit fit, otherwise it may cause the speaker to catch a fire, emitting smoke, or get damaged.

Can you use a splitter with DTV converter boxes?

I have 4 TV’s split off of my antenna, which is in the attic. I hooked up two converter boxes. I get a very strong signal and I’m getting stations that were too weak over analog, but I keep losing signal. Certain stations will not come in at night. Is this because more than one TV is hooked to my antenna or could it be my converter box is not pulling in the signal. I am at a total loss. Please help.

I have only one TV connected to my converter box and the same thing happens..DTV is pretty much all or nothing. Propagation conditions change over time and especially with the sun. If you are getting more stations that you were with analog, consider yourself lucky. Most people are receiving fewer stations.

The splitter might be decreasing the signal a little, but probably not enough to make a difference. Of course, you can run a test, the next time you loose a station that you had, disconnect the splitter and connect only one box to the antenna. If the signal comes back, then the splitter is a significant factor.

Another thing you can do is make sure your aiming the antenna in the best direction, maybe you can aim it more toward the stations you are loosing without sacrificing the stronger stations. The link below will help you figure out which way to aim.

Something I’m thinking about is reverse splitter…..something that would let me use 2 or more antennas at once so I could aim them in different directions. That might not be possible…but I’m hoping it can be done.
